Veterans Into Trucking

Veterans bring discipline, safety awareness, and often real experience operating heavy vehicles. Trucking is a natural next mission, and there are programs designed to make the transition faster. Highway Hauling Heroes is proud to help veterans get on the road.

Skip the CDL Skills Test with Military Experience

FMCSA’s Military Skills Test Waiver Program lets qualified service members and veterans skip the CDL skills test. In general, you must:

  • Apply within one year of leaving a military job that required operating a commercial-type vehicle
  • Have at least two years of safe experience driving trucks or buses comparable to civilian commercial vehicles
  • Meet safe driving record requirements and have no disqualifying offenses
  • Have your commanding officer endorse your safe driving record

You will still need to pass your state’s knowledge tests. Each state runs its own process, so contact your state licensing agency for details.

Paying for Training

  • Veterans may be able to use GI Bill education benefits for approved CDL training programs. Ask the school whether it is approved for VA benefits.
  • Local American Job Centers often have veteran representatives who can help with training funds and job searches. Find one at CareerOneStop.org.

Steps to Get Started

  1. Gather your military driving records and DD-214.
  2. Get a DOT medical card.
  3. Apply for your Commercial Learner’s Permit and ask about the skills test waiver.
  4. Review our full Get Your CDL guide.
  5. Sign up for Driver Career Connect so we can connect you with veteran-friendly employers.

Program rules can change. Confirm current eligibility with FMCSA, the VA, and your state licensing agency.
